How to tell if contact lens is still in eye?

We use contact lens for cosmetics, prescription, bandage etc. There is quite a good number of population familiar with the use of them. To figure out this worrisome condition, let us explore how to deal with that situation on our own at home.

Observing the blurring of vision

To check the presence of the contact lens in the eye, one needs to observe the blurring of vision in the eye. For that purpose, you have to close one eye and observe how good and clear you can see with the eye. Repeat the same process with the other eye. Now compare the vision and extent of blurring. The eye with more blurring is most likely to have a contact lens in it.

Moving eyes in different locaitons

If the blurring indiciation test still confuses you then take a moment to relax your eyes. Now see in different directions and check for any discomfort and foreign body sensation in the eye. The presence of contact lens in the eye can cause foregin body sensation.

Mirror test

Sometimes, the simplest way to check if your contact lens is still in your eye is to look in the mirror. Sit in front of the mirror in proper lighting and try to observe the presence of lens. Check the corners of eye and under the eyelid as well. There is a 6 o’clock mark on the lens which is very useful in its setting. Try to figure that mark by carefully looking into the mirror.

Using artificial tears

If you are still not sure then put saline solution or artificial tears in the eye. The excessive moisture will help in dislodging the lens or it can help in moving the lens back into position making it more visible.

Massaging the eyelid

Contact lenses can sometimes get stuck under the eyelid due to their flat shape, making it difficult to see or feel. This is especially common with soft lenses that can easily fold up due to large diameter and softness. Gently pull down your lower eyelid and look for the lens. If you don’t see it there, lift your upper eyelid while looking down into a mirror. Use a clean finger to gently massage your eyelid and try to check the presence and location of the lens.

Redness

If your eye is red or irritated, it could be a sign that the contact lens is still present in eye but in an incorrect position causing disomfort. A misplaced lens can cause redness. Hence examine eye under the mirror and do any of the self examination test mentioned in point number 1, 2 and 3.

Excessive watering

Excessive watering in the eye is also an indication of presence of contact lens if one has forgotten to take them out. It needs to be repositioned.

Checking the lens case

If you’ve just removed or thought you removed your lenses but are unsure whether one is still in your eye, check your lens case. This is a simple but effective way to confirm whether the lens was removed and stored properly. Always make this habit of immediately putting the lens from the eyes into its case.
